CPSCC 2010

The CUCC (aka CPSCC) is approaching once again. Last year (2009), if I remember correctly Waterloo came tied in 2nd in the A division. We sent 2 teams of 4 people. Only eight people because it was in Kingston, in -20 degree celcius weather. Anyways, enough nostalgia...let's talk about 2010!

The information for the tourney can be found here below. If you are interested in playing, Alfonso will be forming teams during the month of November (in hopes of meeting the early bird deadline). Please e-mail your information to him...-Full name, Rating (State system if not CFC, eg. FIDE), School year (eg. 2B)

Preliminary teams will be built in about 2 weeks, and any conflicts will be resolved before final exams hopefully.

Hello,

Midterms have come and gone for most people, so hopefully everyone will be less busy. If you haven't played your tournament games yet, please do so ASAP and report the scores to me. I have update the bracket with the most recent games I have recorded.

Please take a look and make sure I haven't made any mistakes.

Thanks,
Alfonso Cheng

Interesting Chess Game

So one of my friends posted on facebook about this flashy checkmate and I found it worth watching.

http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/unive-friedels-flashing-finale/

It comes in a video form with discussion from the GM who played it or just the game played out without any analysis. It is quite advanced but move 16. Ra7 is just genius and something to learn from.

The next club meeting will be on Wednesday 2:30-4 =)

Cheers,
Alfonso

Chess Club Times

So, it was a horrible idea to procrastinate that lab report...definitely took longer than expected. Hopefully I won't repeat the same mistake this week!!

There has been lots of input from avid chess players and a lot are saying that Monday+Wednesdays are not a good time. It's understandable that class is more important than chess, so we are going to try and accommodate more players by changing the times up. We can't appease all the chess players on campus this term, but hopefully we can fit the majority of schedules. On the right, there is a poll; please pick from the options, 1 or 2 times when you would like chess club to be held. This will hopefully give us a better sense of what time is better for everyone.

Unfortunately, we have only booked the SLC 2134 for Mondays and Wednesdays 2:30-4pm. However we can see if we can book a different SLC room for the other time slots. If this is not possible, then the club will have to be held elsewhere or just in the cafeteria/lounge area of SLC. So go ahead and vote!

Cheers,
Alfonso

New Blog

So, despite being extremely busy in my 2b term as an engineer undergrad at UW, I have decided to procrastinate my lab report further and start a chess club blog.
I figured it would be a good place to document any of the things that are happening and also post some links of chess interest or to just provide me with another source of distraction.

Thanks to all members new and old who have showed up so far this term. It has been a hectic fall and there has been much debate over good meeting times. Of course it will be difficult to find a good time for everyone but we're trying to work something out.

This term Maylin and I are both at school and we have agreed to run the club together. Not much going on right now but I'd like to turn everyone's heads towards:

http://www.kwchessclub.com/schedule.html
Once again, KW chess club is hosting the oktoberfest chess tournament in kitchener. If anyone is interested, then feel free to sign up!

As for our own tournament, there is one coming up and I am working the details out on that. One reason I started this blog is so that I can hopefully post the pairings and results up somewhere for everyone to see.

I guess it's about time I get back to work. Hope to see more chess players come out this term.

Thanks,
Alfonso
